Methods of catheter placement and change at home There are two methods for catheter placement:

  1. Urethral, where the insertion is done through the urethra.
  2. Suprapubic, where the insertion is done through the abdominal wall.

Types of Foley Catheter Placement used:

  1. Single-lumen catheters, are used for intermittent catheterization and in cases of urethral stricture.
  2. Double-lumen or Foley catheters, with a balloon to keep them in place.
  3. Triple-lumen catheters, are used for bladder irrigation and hematuria.

  2. Measurement of urine for fluid balance control.
  3. Neurological conditions affecting urination.
  4. Monitoring urine output during surgical procedures.

  6. Patients before urological interventions.

Contraindications for urethral catheter placement:

  1. Acute prostatitis.
  2. Injury or suspected injury to the urethra.
Foley Catheter Placement at home:
  1. Is performed following the doctor’s instructions.
  2. Depends on the patient and the type of catheter.
  3. The latex catheter should be changed every two weeks.
Complications of catheter use at home:

The most common complication is catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). Epididymitis, inflammation of the epididymis. Catheter blockage. Urinary leakage from the urethra. Urethral injury during catheter placement. Hematuria.
